Songjiang Martyrs' Cemetery is a classic red tourism destination, as well as a base for patriotic education and national defense education.

The predecessor of Songjiang Martyrs' Cemetery was the memorial monument for martyrs Hou Shaokai and Jiang Huilin, which was located in the peach garden of the county nursery. In May 1986, it was officially named “Songjiang Martyrs' Cemetery” with the approval of the People's Government of Songjiang County. To better commemorate the deeds of revolutionary martyrs, starting in 2011 and over the course of two years, Songjiang Martyrs' Cemetery completed an overall renovation.

The renovated cemetery covers an area of 30.172 mu, with a construction area of approximately 2,399 square meters. The memorial monument stands 20 meters tall and is composed of four descending red flags, symbolizing deep remembrance for the revolutionary martyrs; the walls are red, representing the blood shed by the martyrs that dyed them; the black-background, gold-lettered inscription on the monument—“Long Live the Fallen Martyrs”—is in the handwriting of Comrade Mao Zedong. It now includes a 2,000-square-meter mourning plaza, and within the 1,652-square-meter memorial hall, the glorious deeds of 22 representative martyrs from various periods in Songjiang are highlighted; the entirely relocated burial area spans approximately 900 square meters and is the resting place of 172 martyrs, including 4 from the Great Revolution period, 12 from the Anti-Japanese War period, 20 from the Liberation War period, 79 from the Korean War period, and 57 from the Socialist Construction period.

The memorial monuments for martyrs Hou Shaokai (inscribed by Comrade Lu Dingyi), Jiang Huilin (inscribed by Comrade Chen Yun), and Gu Guilong (inscribed by Comrade Chen Yun) within Songjiang Martyrs' Cemetery are county-level protected cultural relics designated by the People's Government of Songjiang County; in 1999, Songjiang Martyrs' Cemetery was named a “Shanghai Revolutionary Martyrs’ Memorial Building Protection Unit”; in 2010, it was awarded the title of “Shanghai Advanced Unit for National Defense Education for All Citizens”; and in 2012, it was recognized as a “Shanghai Patriotic Education Base.”
