Ancient Cultural Site of Tangmiaocun

The Ancient Cultural Site of Tangmiaocun is a protected cultural heritage site of Shanghai Municipality.

The Ancient Cultural Site of Tangmiaocun (Tangmiaocun Guwenhua Yizhi) is located about 11 kilometers west of the county seat, in the area around Tangcunmiao and its vicinity at the southwestern foot of Xiaokunshan Mountain. In 1962, during an archaeological survey organized by the Municipal Cultural Relics Management Committee, many ancient relics were discovered on both banks of Huatianjing. In December 1980, the Municipal Cultural Relics Management Committee conducted a trial excavation of the site. The site covers an area of approximately 64,000 square meters and contains cultural remains from both early and late periods.

The late-period remains were found in a black soil layer 1.34 to 2.20 meters deep. Artifacts unearthed include triangular stone knives, semicircular stone knives, and cord-marked, vein-patterned round-bottomed pottery jars belonging to the early Incised Pottery Culture of the Maqiao type. There were also remnants of hard pottery urns with rice-sieve and "米" character patterns from the late Incised Pottery Culture of the Qijiadun type, as well as rope-patterned tiles and window-pane-patterned pottery shards from the Han Dynasty. The early-period remains, located in a yellow-rusted soil layer about 2.20 meters deep, have very thin accumulations. Four tombs were excavated, yielding artifacts such as rectangular perforated stone axes, triangular perforated stone plows, flat-chisel-foot pottery tripods, hourglass-shaped petal-foot cups, false-bellied trays, and dou vessels. These belong to the Songze Culture and date back nearly 6,000 years.

In 1977, the Municipal Cultural Relics Bureau designated the Ancient Cultural Site of Tangmiaocun as a municipal-level protected ancient cultural site location.

Xiaokunshan Town: Located in the northwest of Songjiang’s central urban area, Xiaokunshan Town is 38 kilometers from Shanghai People's Square. It was established in March 1978. After the merger with Dagang Town in January 2001, Xiaokunshan Town was rebuilt. In June 2002, Xiaokunshan Town was abolished and replaced with the "Shanghai Songjiang Science and Technology Park." In July 2007, the "Science and Technology Park" was abolished and the administrative structure of Xiaokunshan Town was reinstated. The town currently has 8 village committees and 6 residential committees, with 6,660 households and a population of 19,050. The population density is 629 people per square kilometer, and the total area of the town is 48.7 square kilometers.
