Tianfei Temple in Fangta Garden

Located within Fangta Garden at No. 235 Zhongshan East Road, it was first built during the early Song Dynasty in Shanghai’s Xiaodongmen area and was called Shunji Temple, dedicated to Mazu. It underwent multiple renovations during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties but was destroyed in warfare in the third year of the Xianfeng reign (1853) during the Qing Dynasty. In the tenth year of the Guangxu reign (1884), it was rebuilt at the north end of Henan Road Bridge over the Suzhou River. The main hall of Tianfei Temple has five bays, a hip-and-gable roof, floor-length windows at the front and back, and corridors on all four sides. Its beams and pillars are thick and sturdy, with moon beams and architraves carved with crane and cloud motifs, and it displays a plaque inscribed with “Holy Mother of Meizhou.” In 1980, it was relocated to Fangta Garden. In 2002, the Songjiang District People’s Government renovated it. The Mazu statue has now been restored. It has been listed as a municipal-level protected cultural heritage site in the eighth batch of such designations.
