[Fangta Garden, No. 235 Zhongshan East Road · Qing Dynasty] Chen Huacheng, a native of Tong’an, Fujian, served as the Viceroy of the Jiangnan Navy in the 20th year of the Daoguang reign (1840) during the Qing Dynasty, stationed in Songjiang Prefecture. In the 22nd year (1842), he led his troops to resist the British forces invading Wusongkou and died in battle, posthumously honored with the title “Loyal and Pitiable.” In the same year, locals built a shrine in his memory, which was reconstructed in the 24th year of the Guangxu reign (1898). Facing south, it covers an area of 270 square meters. The existing structures include the entrance hall and the main hall. The entrance hall has a construction area of 79.35 square meters, featuring three bays and seven rafters, with a flush gable roof. The southern architrave is adorned with intercolumnar bracket sets, and the front hall is inscribed with... The main hall has a construction area of 115 square meters, also with three bays and nine rafters, featuring a front section with a flipped eave, and the eave architrave is fitted with intercolumnar bracket sets. It is styled in vibrant colors. In 1912, the Songjiang branch of the Tongmenghui (Chinese Revolutionary Alliance) was established here. In the same year, Dr. Sun Yat-sen visited Songjiang for an inspection and stayed at Shan Zhai, located to the east of the shrine. Originally situated in Xiujia Garden on the western section of Zhongshan Second Road, it was relocated in its entirety to Fangta Garden in 1999. It has been listed as a municipal cultural relics protection unit in the eighth batch.
