Huaye Apartments

Huaye Apartments is a protected cultural heritage site of Shanghai.

Huaye Apartments is located at the intersection of North Shaanxi Road and West Nanjing Road. The Huaye Apartments building features a mixed structure, covering an area of 2,183 square meters, with a construction area of 10,000 square meters and a height of over 40 meters. The main building and auxiliary buildings of the apartment complex consist of three unit blocks, interconnected in the middle by a garage and arcade. The auxiliary buildings on both sides start at four floors, followed by 8 floors, 9 floors, up to the 10-floor central main building.

The main building is a classic example of Spanish castle-style architecture, square in shape, with square corner turrets at each corner. The top features a multi-faceted conical, pointed roof. The entrance has a porch with an overhanging canopy. The lintels above the doors and windows are distinctly decorated in Spanish style. Both the exterior walls and ceilings are inlaid with glass bricks to enhance natural lighting. The layout of the apartment rooms mostly adopts a suite-style design, with unit types including two-bedroom, three-bedroom, and four-bedroom layouts. Bathroom and toilet facilities, as well as walls, are finished with tiles and other materials, showcasing relatively refined craftsmanship.

Huaye Apartments was designated as a cultural heritage site by Shanghai in 1989.
