Shanghai's brand-new Wheelock Square incorporates new aesthetic elements
Located in the prime area of Nanjing West Road in Shanghai, the uniquely designed and elegant Wheelock Square stands 61 stories tall, making it the highest building in this commercial, entertainment, and residential hub on the west side of the Huangpu River. It was designed by the award-winning New York architecture firm Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF).
Shanghai’s new Wheelock Square is situated near the historic Jing’an Temple and Jing’an Park, with both Nanjing West Road and Yan’an West Road — major traffic arteries in Shanghai — flanking it on either side. This iconic building stands at the western end of Nanjing Road, adjacent to the Yan’an Elevated Road, effectively connecting key areas of Shanghai and both of the city’s international airports.
A 2,000-square-meter shopping plaza is connected to the main tower via a covered skybridge, providing a tranquil outdoor dining area between the shopping plaza and the main lobby. On the northeast side of the main tower, near the intersection of Nanjing West Road and Jing’an Temple, there is also an elegantly designed water feature.
Wheelock Square extensively adopts eco-friendly architectural concepts. For example, its energy-efficient glass curtain wall not only maximizes natural lighting inside the building but also helps prevent heat loss. Other sustainable design elements include water-saving faucets, independent ventilation systems on each floor, and a round-the-clock building management system that monitors the energy efficiency of lighting, air conditioning, and more. In addition to the thoughtfully landscaped gardens within the plaza itself, Wheelock Square is surrounded by pleasant greenery, including Jing’an Park and the Shanghai Children’s Palace.
