Shoushan Leisure Resort
Shoushan Leisure Resort
Shoushan Leisure Resort is located at the 71-kilometer mark of the Linzha Highway. It derives its name from General Yuan Shoushan, a patriotic hero who fought against Japanese and Russian forces during his era, and who is buried here.
Shoushan Leisure Resort enjoys a superior geographical location, with smooth transportation and convenient communication. As a suburban park of the world-famous oil city of Daqing, it features both natural landscapes and cultural attractions that are highly distinctive. Its beauty unfolds like a poetic painting, resembling an unpolished jade that radiates a simple and natural charm, attracting numerous visitors to relax, explore history, and enjoy the pleasures of nature.
Shoushan Leisure Resort spans a vast area with abundant water and unique mountains, and has a long history. As early as the late 11th century, the indigenous Daur Mongolian people engaged in herding and hunting here, and the region still preserves its distinctive local ethnic culture to this day. Hence, the Mongolians refer to Shoushan Leisure Resort as “Ersi Xibo,” meaning “sand fence” or “sand tribe,” which carries the typical naming characteristics of a nomadic people.
The planning and development of Shoushan Leisure Resort emphasize regional and ethnic, as well as folk, characteristics. Upon entering the main gate of the resort, visitors are greeted by a massive and majestic sculpture called “Suoyong Fort,” symbolizing national unity, unbreakable strength, freedom, bravery, the prosperity of the ethnic group, and eternity. Walking along the broad road leads to the picturesque Sandy Botanical Garden, which is surrounded by water on three sides, features undulating peaks, lush greenery, and a rich variety of plants. The ancient elm trees here are particularly unique in their growth. Landscape experts describe the ancient elms as each pair having its own distinct form, likening the Sandy Botanical Garden to a magical bonsai and a natural root carving garden.
Longhu Lake boasts vast, clear waters and clean sand, making it an ideal natural bathing spot, as well as a great place for swimming, water skiing, boating, sand bathing, and summer retreats. The famous Lake-Field is located on the eastern bay of the lake. When the water is calm, it ripples gently, but during windy or stormy weather, the waves crash violently against the shore, churning the sand—resembling a rising tide in the sea and creating an extremely spectacular scene, which is rare in the inland grassland regions of northern China. The lakeside stone-paved street is wide and bright, and a newly built ethnic song and dance stage hosts large-scale cultural performances every weekend, featuring traditional Mongolian songs and dances. After enjoying the beautiful mountain and water scenery, visitors naturally want to savor local delicacies such as Mongolian cuisine and fisherman-style dishes, treating their taste buds to a feast.
Shoushan Leisure Resort is rich in Mongolian ethnic flavor and features a Mongolian resort (Grassland Tribe) with multiple functions including dining, accommodation, and entertainment. Both the distinctive yurts and the activity content follow traditional cultural and lifestyle setups. A visit here allows one to experience the grassland carnival scene of living in felt tents, eating dairy and meat, drinking wine, singing when wine is not enough, dancing when singing is not enough, and stomping when dancing is not enough. The ancient charm of the Grassland Tribe attracts many domestic and international tourists to come for inspiration and vacation.
In the south there is Lin Zexu, in the north there is Yuan Shoushan—two legendary heroes, two national figures, who together wrote a glorious chapter in China’s history of resisting foreign aggression. While there are memorials to the anti-Japanese and anti-Russian patriotic General Yuan Shoushan in Heihe and Qiqihar in Heilongjiang Province, the true resting place of General Shoushan is at the geomantically blessed site of Shoushan Leisure Resort, which faces the lake and backs onto the mountain. According to historical records, Yuan Shoushan, styled Meifeng, was a descendant of the late Ming Dynasty general Yuan Chonghuan and a member of the Han Army’s White Banner. During the First Sino-Japanese War in 1894, he displayed bravery in battle and was commended by the Qing government. In 1899, he was appointed Governor of Heilongjiang. At that time, the Russian Empire invaded Heilongjiang, and General Yuan Shoushan led his troops in resistance until he died a martyr’s death. Because his wife was the daughter of the Daur tribal chieftain (king) Xilabuluopil, the chieftain chose the current burial site for his son-in-law in the Daur territory. To commemorate the martyr, strengthen patriotic and national unity education, promote tourism development, and build a better Daur territory, Daqing City decided to construct the Shoushan General Park in the style of a stele forest, turning it into a base for patriotic education.
