Kulbin River Scenic Area

The Kulbin River Scenic Area centers around the Kulbin Reservoir and the Kulbin River downstream from the power station, featuring expansive waters, crystal-clear currents, and picturesque landscapes where mountains and water complement each other. In summer, visitors can take boat tours to enjoy the lake and mountain scenery, while in winter, they can admire the Kulbin rime ice.

The Kulbin River originates from the northern foothills of the Lesser Khingan Mountains in Yichun, close to the mountaintop. Stretching over 300 kilometers, it flows into the Heilongjiang River. As it reaches the middle section and enters the Dapinglin Forest Farm under the Hongxing Forestry Bureau, the river undergoes a remarkable transformation. The left bank features a 170-kilometer-long volcanic rock valley area, where natural volcanic eruptions have formed long “stone dragons” and vast “stone seas.” Amid the “stone sea,” uniquely shaped trees and Xing’an rhododendrons (locally called dazi xiang) thrive. The right bank is dominated by a continuous mountain range, where along the riverside, there are sometimes steep cliffs and majestic stone peaks and caves, and at other times, gently winding stretches with white birches and red willows lining the banks—making it a rare spot for sightseeing and photography.
