During the Liao Dynasty, Tayingzi Township was called Yizhou. In 1023 AD, Emperor Shengzong of the Liao, Yelü Longxu, built a private city here for his second daughter, Princess Shuguo, and named it “Yizhou.” On the ninth day of the fourth lunar month in 1247, Zhang Sanfeng, the founder of Wudang Sect and the patriarch of Tai Chi, was born in the ancient city of Yizhou. After the death of Princess Shuguo in 1061, her daughter, Empress Xuanyi of Emperor Daozong, donated the Yizhou city to the imperial court. At that time, the city had over 4,000 households and a population of 28,000, with city walls stretching over 4,600 meters. Later, Yizhou became an important stronghold during the Liao, Jin, and Yuan dynasties and served as the political, economic, cultural, and military center of Northeast China.

The surface of the Yizhou city ruins is scattered with bricks, tiles, and various ceramic fragments from the Liao, Jin, and Yuan periods, especially near the ancient pagoda. Artifacts excavated within the city include a Tang-style bronze mirror with auspicious beast and scrolling vine patterns replicated during the Liao Dynasty. A brick-lined ancient well was discovered in the backyard of a local resident’s home, yielding ten Yuan Dynasty relics, among others.

Tayingzi Pagoda is located slightly west of the center of Yizhou. This ancient pagoda is built from blue bricks, stands 32 meters tall, and features an octagonal thirteen-tiered dense-eave style. Due to years of weathering, only eight tiers of the pagoda eaves are now visible, with the levels above the eighth being damaged, and the pagoda finial no longer existing.

Tayingzi Town: Tayingzi Township is situated along the Raoyang River. To the east is Halt Town in Zhangwu County, to the south is Jianshe Town, to the west is Wuhuanchi Town, and to the north is Ping’andi Town. National Highway 101 runs east-west through the area, and the site also boasts the ancient ruins of Yizhou City from the Liao Dynasty, with the ancient pagoda standing prominently within the city.
