The former site of Tongzhou Barracks is located at No. 10 Yaochang Village, Tongzhou District, and is listed as part of the eighth batch of municipal-level cultural heritage protection units in Beijing. This military barracks served as the garrison site for the troops under General Feng Yuxiang’s subordinate Zhang Zhizhong when Feng was appointed as the Army Inspector of the Beiyang Government in 1922. From 1948 to 1954, the Cipher Bureau of the General Staff Department of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army was stationed here, and many significant military orders were issued from this location. The barracks are divided into eastern, central, and western sections. The central section consists of a bell tower, an auditorium, and east and west wing rooms, while the eastern and western sections each comprise six rows of barracks, with ten rooms per row. This site represents one of the most intact examples of early modern military barracks architecture in the Beijing area and holds considerable historical value.
