The Architectural Complex of Modern Schools in Tongzhou

The Architectural Complex of Modern Schools in Tongzhou is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Tongzhou District is home to nine century-old schools. In addition to Luhe High School and Houncang Primary School, there are also Tongzhou No. 2 High School, Gongyuan Primary School, Zhongshan Street Primary School, Sikong Fenshujie Primary School, Dongguan Primary School, Nanguan Primary School, and Zhangjiawan Town Primary School. Among these nine century-old schools, the “eldest brother”—Luhe High School, founded in 1867, is the oldest, now 146 years old.

The architectural style of Luhe High School is quaint and unique, among which the “Xie’s Building” is the most significant. The existing original school buildings, including Wei’s Building, Xie’s Building, Wen’s Building, and Luyou Building, feature a blend of early American Eclectic style and traditional Chinese architectural techniques.

In May 2013, the Architectural Complex of Modern Schools in Tongzhou was listed as part of the seventh batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
