Former Site of Tongzhou Barracks

The former site of Tongzhou Barracks is a protected cultural heritage site in Beijing.

The former site of Tongzhou Barracks is located at No. 10 Yaochang Village, Tongzhou District, and is listed as part of the eighth batch of municipal-level cultural heritage protection units in Beijing.

This military barracks was the garrison site for the troops under General Feng Yuxiang’s subordinate Zhang Zhizhong when Feng was appointed as the Army Inspector of the Beiyang Government in 1922. From 1948 to 1954, the Cipher Bureau of the General Staff Department of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army was stationed here, and many major military operations were directed from this location. The barracks are divided into eastern, central, and western sections. The central section includes a bell tower, an auditorium, and east and west wing rooms, while the eastern and western sections each have six rows of barracks, with ten rooms in each row. This site is one of the most well-preserved examples of early modern military barracks in the Beijing area and is of high historical significance.
