It gets its name from being situated in the Changyu Valley. The village was established during the Ming Dynasty. Located in the Changyu Valley, it was originally called Changyu Kou. During the Zhengde era of the Ming Dynasty, a fortress was built here and named Changyu City. In the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty, a new city was added on the foundation of the old one, and later developed into a village, which took its name from the city. This city lies to the north against the Great Wall and faces Zhenbian City to the south, with Jiuyang City to the east. Its strategic location is extremely crucial, serving as an important pass in the defense of Beijing, the capital of the Ming Dynasty.
