Gushan is a small hill on the eastern side of Xishan Lake, named for being surrounded by water and standing solitary in the lake. It is an area where many historical relics related to Su Dongpo in Huizhou West Lake are concentrated. The hill got its name because it was originally surrounded by water on all sides, resembling the Solitary Hill in Hangzhou’s West Lake. During the Song Dynasty, Qichan Temple was built on the hill, where Su Dongpo formed a close friendship with the monks.
