Huizhou Gushan (Solitary Hill)

Gushan is a small hill on the eastern side of Xishan Lake, named for being surrounded by water and standing solitary in the lake.

Gushan is an area where many historical relics related to Su Dongpo in Huizhou West Lake are concentrated. The hill got its name because it was originally surrounded by water on all sides, resembling the Solitary Hill in Hangzhou’s West Lake. During the Song Dynasty, Qichan Temple was built on the hill, where Su Dongpo formed a close friendship with the monks. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Gushan was developed into a scenic spot. It features structures such as the Zhao Yun Tomb, Liuru Pavilion, the Statue of Su Dongpo the Scholar (built in 1983 as a granite round sculpture, 4.4 meters in total height), the Zhao Yun Statue (built in 2008), the Su Dongpo Memorial Hall (Hall 1 and Hall 2, built in 1983 and 1986 respectively), and the Su Dongpo’s Calligraphy Relics Wall (a stele wall). Each major structure creates distinct garden spaces, endowing the entire scenic area with both the secluded charm of a mountain forest and rich historical and cultural significance. Visitors can explore traces of Su Dongpo here, immerse themselves in the aura of this poetic master, and perhaps engage in a spiritual dialogue with the great literary figure of the Song Dynasty amidst the beautiful landscape of West Lake. Due to the concentration of Su Dongpo’s relics on Gushan, it has earned the reputation of “Su’s Relics on Solitary Hill.” These relics also form the core content of the “Memorial & Nostalgia Zone” within Dongpo Garden.
