Diazui Islet

The “Diazui” in the scenic phrase “Liudan and Diazui” refers to Diazui Islet, a small island on Pinghu Lake. In the Northern Song Dynasty, Chen Chen, the prefect of Huizhou, first built a solitary islet pavilion here, which was later renamed Diazui Pavilion during the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty. After the outbreak of the Xinhai Revolution, to commemorate the martyrs who died in the Battle of Ma’an in Huizhou, Liudan Pavilion was erected on the islet in 1913. The pavilion’s name is taken from Wen Tianxiang’s line “Keep the loyal heart to shine in the annals of history.”

A talented woman of the Ming Dynasty, Kong Sha’e, wrote a poem titled “Visiting West Lake,” praising this scenery: “West Lake and Xi Shi are a perfect pair; the lake surface perfectly suits Diazui Islet. A stretch of beauty defies depiction; the moon-shaped bay twists like a delicate brow.”
