Huizhou Wenbi Pagoda

Wenbi Pagoda is one of the three pagodas in Huicheng District. It stands alongside the Sizhou Pagoda at West Lake and the Wenxing Pagoda at Lower Angle.

The Wenbi (historically called without the character for “pagoda”), located on the Ming Dynasty city wall of the Huizhou Prefecture, was built during the Tongzhi era of the Qing Dynasty.

This pavilion-style octagonal five-story brick pagoda, built in the early Qing Dynasty, is a five-story brick structure with a regular octagon shape, standing 20.29 meters tall with a base side length of 2.5 meters. The interior of the pagoda is not accessible. On the eight walls of the pagoda body, the second story features square windows as decoration, while the third story has guillotine-shaped doors on the south and north sides. The fourth and fifth stories only have doors on the south side. The pagoda finial is uniquely designed, consisting of layers including the finial base, inverted bowl, canopy, and gem, all proportionally balanced and highly decorative. The first story of the pagoda body is relatively tall, at 3.05 meters, with each successive level getting lower and the area gradually decreasing.

According to historical records, the name “Wenbi Pagoda” carries the aspiration that the pagoda would bless local scholars with success and upward mobility in their careers. Reflecting this meaning, the Dongchengji area beneath the pagoda is also referred to as the “Path to Success.”
