Pressure on Both Feet This time, let’s talk about “pressure on both feet.” Usually, when we mention applying pressure to the board with both feet, we instinctively think of applying the same amount of force with both feet. This kind of pressure is limited to when we’re standing on flat ground—that is, when we’re standing vertically on a horizontal plane. The way we apply pressure with our feet to the snowboard while skiing on the slopes is quite different from when we’re standing on flat ground. Generally speaking, when making turns while skiing, the pressure on the downhill foot is slightly greater than that on the uphill foot. It’s almost never the case that the uphill foot has more pressure than the downhill foot—unless, perhaps, during specific training exercises. So if the pressure intensity on our feet differs when we’re turning, why do we still use the term “pressure on both feet” (or applying pressure)? The purpose of this terminology is to explain that the pressure applied by both feet to the snowboard isn’t an isolated action, but rather a coordinated, unified movement. That is, although the amount of pressure applied by the downhill and uphill feet may differ, the actions of both feet applying pressure are not isolated—they work together in coordination. This coordination serves the overall movement of the body. In other words, to achieve balanced body movement and successfully steer the snowboard through a turn, the two feet must coordinate with each other, with the downhill foot taking the lead and the uphill foot providing support, adjusting appropriately based on speed and centrifugal force to maintain balance.
