The New Year Festival (Nian Li), widely celebrated in western Guangdong, especially in areas such as Dianbai, Huazhou, and Gaozhou, varies slightly in timing and details from one village to another. In Dianbai’s villages, Nian Li events take place from the first to the thirtieth day of the Lunar New Year, featuring a variety of activities such as “deity parades,” dragon dances, traditional opera performances, and “child spirit plays.”
During Nian Li, every household prepares table after table of delicious dishes. No matter when guests arrive, they are assured of a hearty meal. What’s unique is that there are no restrictions on who the guests are — anyone who shows up is welcome, and guests can even bring friends along for the feast. Visitors need not bring gifts; in fact, bringing presents might even draw a gentle scolding from the host. The more guests at a Nian Li celebration, the more honorable it is, as it signifies good social connections; the more dishes served, the better, as it reflects a thriving household.
