Originally referring to the skill of riding and controlling horses, equestrianism has evolved into a unique sport that tests the harmony and teamwork between horse and rider in a competitive arena. China has a long history of equestrian activities, and equestrian sports once flourished in the country. During the Han and Tang dynasties, people from all walks of life, regardless of gender or age, were enthusiastic about equestrian entertainment such as archery on horseback and polo. There are many types of equestrian events, but the ones included in the official Olympic program are dressage, show jumping, and eventing.
Equestrian competitions have age requirements: participants in eventing and show jumping must be at least 18 years old, while those in dressage must be at least 16. Horses must be at least seven years old. Competing horses must be registered and carry an official passport recognized by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI). Riders in show jumping and dressage are required to wear formal competition attire. Military or police personnel may also wear their uniforms. Male and female riders can compete against each other under equal conditions.
Equestrian events date back to the ancient Olympic Games held in 680 BC, which featured chariot races. At the second modern Olympic Games in Paris, France, in 1900, show jumping was included as an official event. By the fifth edition in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1912, the number of equestrian disciplines had increased to five. The equestrian competitions of the 29th Olympic Games were held in Hong Kong, China, from August 9 to 20, 2008. Show jumping and dressage took place at the main venue, expanded from the Sha Tin Racecourse, while the cross-country portion was held at the Beas River Country Club and the Hong Kong Golf Club.
Competition venue facilities:
The dressage arena is 60 meters long and 20 meters wide, surrounded by barriers. The show jumping arena must cover an area of at least 2,500 square meters, with over ten obstacles arranged along a pre-planned course. Obstacles must not exceed 1.6 meters in height or 2 meters in spread. They can vary in design but should not surprise or distress the horse or rider. Obstacles and their components must be able to fall if hit, but should neither be so sensitive that they topple from a light touch nor so heavy that they could easily unseat a horse. Eventing, also known as combined training, consists of three disciplines that riders complete consecutively on the same horse. The total score across the three events determines the rankings, which are awarded for both individual and team categories.
