Being passionate about racing, he believes that the concentration required during races has greatly helped his performance in acting. Since starting to hike, he admits that his material desires have lessened, because for hikers, all equipment needs boil down to just three key points: being lightweight, essential for survival, and keeping warm—everything else is superfluous. Through hiking, he has changed his lifestyle.
2 Hikers Fall into Valley; Bodies Transported to Lishan Health Center
A team of eight hikers from Taichung City was climbing Wuming Mountain during the Qingming holiday when two of them fell into a valley. After rescue teams arrived at the scene, the bodies were transported by helicopter today to Fushoushan Farm and then to Lishan Health Center. Taichung City Fire Department received a report at 4:12 p.m. on the 3rd from Nantou County Fire Department, stating that an eight-person hiking team had planned to climb Wuming Mountain and encountered an accident where two hikers, surnamed Liang and Wu, fell into a valley at Wuming Cliff. Among them, the man surnamed Liang was a professor at Providence University. The fire department noted that the team leader descended and located the two individuals, who were initially determined to have no signs of life, requiring urgent rescue assistance. The first team of rescuers from Lishan Fire Station—comprising one vehicle and four firefighters—was dispatched immediately. The Hualien County Fire Department also sent out a first team of one vehicle and five firefighters. That night at 12:28 a.m., the first Taichung team advanced to the 17.5K mark of Forest Road 730.

A group of eight hikers from Taichung were climbing Wuming Mountain, which stands at 3,451 meters above sea level in the northern section two of the Central Mountain Range and is known as one of Taiwan’s “Ten Great Peaks,” yesterday evening when two male hikers accidentally fell 70 meters down a cliff and died on the spot. Emergency rescue teams comprising nine members from the Hualien and Taichung Fire Departments were immediately dispatched to the site.
An unidentified hiker in Taichung’s Heping District is suspected to have died after falling into a valley
Frequent hiking accidents reported again today. At 1:52 PM, an unidentified man believed to have fallen into a valley was found near the Shima Farm Dahe Creek Suspension Bridge in Taichung’s Heping District, about 500 meters upstream on the riverside close to the mountain wall. He had a 5 cm laceration on his head and was clearly deceased. Police initially ruled out homicide. Firefighters waded through the creek to move the body to the riverbank, where it was transported by ambulance from the Lishan Branch to the Lishan Health Center. The Huan Shan Police Station stated that the man was around 40 years old, carrying a lightweight hiking backpack with basic rations but no identification to confirm his identity. It is suspected that he mistakenly took a firebreak trail while hiking and accidentally slipped, falling about 50 meters down the side of the creek. His time of death is estimated to be no more than one day ago. Homicide has been preliminarily ruled out, and authorities are actively investigating his identity.

Hiker goes missing; body of a teacher from Nantou First Senior High School transported down the mountain
Zhuang Zhiyang, a math teacher at Nantou First Senior High School, went missing while hiking in the Xinyi Mountain area during the 228 holiday. After a month-long search, his body was found in a bush near a cliff. On the 28th, 12 volunteer firefighters along with the Xinyi Fire Brigade of Nantou County’s Fire Bureau carried his body down the mountain in shifts. The prosecutor’s examination revealed that the body was severely decomposed, making it impossible to determine the time of death, and the cause was ruled as accidental death. Lin Cheng-yi, head of the Third Brigade of Nantou County Fire Bureau, stated that after Zhuang Zhiyang went missing, over 1,000 personnel were mobilized in the search efforts. Police and firefighters rescue lost hikers in foggy mountains
A couple, a 31-year-old surnamed Xie and a 27-year-old surnamed Feng, went hiking together in Yangmingshan yesterday afternoon. Unfamiliar with the terrain, they got lost on the Dutch Trail at Qintian Gang and, with no mobile phone signal, were stranded in the mountains overnight. Fortunately, they climbed to the top of a mountain this morning, where they regained a signal and were able to call for help. Police and firefighters then organized a search and rescue team to locate and rescue them. Shilin District Police Station’s Shanzihou Precinct received a report at 7:52 a.m. today from a member of the public stating that a male and female hiker were lost in the mountains on the Dutch Trail at Qintian Gang. Rescue efforts near month-long mark as body of Nanzih First Senior High teacher found today
Nanzih First Senior High School teacher Zhuang went missing while hiking alone in Nantou during the 228 holiday break. After nearly a month of search operations by Nantou County police, firefighters, and various rescue groups, his hiking pole and machete were found around noon today on the ridge leading from Zhumu Mountain to Shuishe Mountain in Dili Village, Xinyi Township. Rescue personnel then narrowed down the search area and discovered the body around 3 p.m. on the western side approximately 200 to 300 meters above the fork between Shuishe Mountain and Zhumu Mountain, about 100-plus meters deep down a cliff. Lowe’s widow confirmed the discovery of their remains, describing the pair as being “frozen in time.” According to AFP reports, in October 1999, Alex Lowe from the United States and adventure photographer David Bridges were climbing Shisha Pangma, which stands at 8,027 meters above sea level within Chinese territory, when they were swept away by an avalanche of snow and ice. Lowe was considered one of the most important mountaineers of his time, and he and Bridges were close friends as well as climbing partners. Hiking alone is risky — Search for missing man on Peach Mountain enters Day 19
A 61-year-old man surnamed Hsieh and his friends were climbing the Four Beauties of Wuling when he decided to turn back alone to Taoshan Mountain Hut during their attempt on Mount Kalayeh on the 11th. However, by evening, when the four team members had all returned to the hut, Hsieh was nowhere to be found, prompting them to launch a search before quickly reporting him missing.
