Temple of Peaceful Waves

The Temple of Peaceful Waves is located in the northwest corner of Tong'erpu Village, Dengta City, covering an area of 5,000 square meters with a construction area of 1,200 square meters. It was first built during the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty. A stele from the eighth year of the Guangxu reign (1882) records that it included “one Buddha hall, one Guan Yu hall, a pair of flagpoles, one mountain gate, three official rooms, one immortal hall, one Heavenly King hall, one Insect King hall, one Horse hall, and two bell and drum towers.”

There are stone tablets from the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty and a restoration stele from the eighth year of the Guangxu reign (1882 AD). The plaque inscribed with “Heroic Spirit Lasting Through the Ages” was written by Wang Erlie, a successful candidate in the highest imperial examinations during the Qianlong reign. The temple had over ten monks. It was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution in 1966. In May 1998, the Temple of Peaceful Waves was restored. It was rebuilt on a new site, with a main gate facing outward, horse halls on both sides, and side gates installed; the Sangharama Hall has three bays and enshrines the Sangharama Bodhisattva; the Heavenly King Hall also has three bays, with Maitreya Bodhisattva in the center, the Four Heavenly Kings on both sides, and Skanda Bodhisattva at the back; the Mahavira Hall has five bays and houses Sakyamuni Buddha, Guanyin Bodhisattva, and Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva in the central positions, with the Eighteen Arhats seated on the east and west sides; auxiliary halls include the bell tower, drum tower, Insect King hall, and 0 hall; the side rooms serve as guest rooms, dining halls, monks’ quarters, lay practitioners’ rooms, and storage rooms. The temple now presents a completely renewed appearance.
