Built in 1904, Dongyin Island Lighthouse is the northernmost lighthouse in Taiwan and was designated as a national historic site this year. The main light of Dongyin Island Lighthouse was damaged by a typhoon in 1966 and has been extinguished for 50 years. After active restoration efforts by the Maritime and Port Bureau, the work was finally completed this year, and the “Dongyin Island Lighthouse Relighting Ceremony” was held on the evening of June 5, bringing back its former glory.

Facing the Taiwan Strait, Dongyin Island Lighthouse is located on the steep cliffs to the east of Dongyin Island. It is a hollow cylindrical structure built from red bricks with a white exterior finish, exuding the architectural style of 18th-century Europe. Also known as the “Dongyin Villa,” it is an important cultural asset and tourist resource in the Matsu region.

After complex restoration work, Dongyin Island Lighthouse shines again after being inactive for 50 years. The Maritime and Port Bureau specially organized a relighting celebration event to showcase the spectacular sight of the lighthouse radiating brilliance. In the future, it will also integrate the tourism resources of the outlying islands, offering the public a chance to experience the character of human architecture and enjoy an in-depth journey through Matsu.
