The “Japanese Ukiyo-e—Selected Masterpieces from the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum Collection,” specially curated by the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum, will be exhibited at the National Museum of Fine Arts, introducing to domestic audiences the rich content of 100 pieces showcasing the ukiyo-e woodblock prints that flourished during Japan’s Edo period, along with the historical background, cultural customs, and aesthetic traditions they represent. The exhibition also features iconic works by renowned artists, such as Katsushika Hokusai’s famous landscape series “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji” and Utagawa Hiroshige’s classic “Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō,” as well as Kitagawa Utamaro’s large-head portrait bijin-ga (beautiful women paintings) and Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s comic prints.

The exhibition is divided into two special zones introducing “Edo Ukiyo-e” and “Kamigata Ukiyo-e.” In addition to landscape and beautiful women paintings, it also displays yakusha-e (actor prints) of kabuki performers, which were actively produced in Kamigata (now the Kansai region). Nearly all the exhibits are being shown in Taiwan for the first time, making this a rare opportunity to comprehensively explore the development history, social and cultural context, and the profound aesthetic significance of Japanese ukiyo-e through its diverse themes.
