Shine Bright Again！The Stunning Beauty of Dongyin Lighthouse in Matsu

The Dongyin Island Lighthouse, built in 1904, is the northernmost lighthouse in Taiwan and was elevated to a national historic site this year. The main light of the lighthouse was destroyed by a typhoon in 1966 and had been extinguished for 50 years. After active restoration efforts by the Maritime and Port Bureau, it has finally been completed this year. The “Dongyin Island Lighthouse Relighting Ceremony” was held on the evening of June 5, bringing back its former glory.

Facing the Taiwan Strait, Dongyin Island Lighthouse is situated on a steep cliff on the eastern side of Dongyin Island. It is a hollow cylindrical structure made of red bricks with a white-painted exterior, exuding the architectural style of 18th-century Europe. Also known as the “Dongyin Villa,” it is an important cultural asset and tourism resource in the Matsu region.

After complex restoration work, the Dongyin Island Lighthouse shines again after 50 years of inactivity. The Maritime and Port Bureau specially organized a relighting celebration event to showcase the spectacular sight of the lighthouse radiating brilliant light. In the future, it will also integrate resources from outlying island tourism to allow the public to experience the cultural and architectural charm and enjoy an in-depth trip to Matsu.
