Step onto the northernmost tip of Taiwan – The Fugui Cape Lighthouse opens to the public on the 29th

Taiwan’s northernmost lighthouse, the Fugui Cape Lighthouse, can now finally be seen in its full glory by travelers. The Maritime and Port Bureau under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications announcedthat starting from the 29th, the Fugui Cape Lighthouse will officially open to the public, becoming the 11th lighthouse in Taiwan accessible for visits.

The Maritime and Port Bureau noted that the Fugui Cape Lighthouse has a history of over 100 years and was the first lighthouse built by the Japanese in Taiwan. Due to its location within a military-controlled area, it had always been shrouded in mystery. Now, thanks to planning by the Maritime and Port Bureau, it will be open for public visits.

The current lighthouse was rebuilt in 1962. Its tower features black-and-white parallel stripes, and although it was originally planned to stand 30 meters tall, it was reduced to 14.3 meters due to concerns about interfering with air force radar scans—resulting in its now stocky appearance. Additionally, because of the region’s unique geography and climate, heavy fog often occurs during autumn and winter. To aid navigation, a “foghorn” is installed inside the tower, emitting a 3-second blast every 30 seconds with a sound range of 3 nautical miles, guiding ships safely through the fog.

The North Coast & Guanyinshan National Scenic Area Administration will host a special event titled “Extreme North Fugui Cape, Tourism and Joy” at 4:30 p.m. on the 29th right at the Fugui Cape Lighthouse. In addition to a temporary post office where visitors can send postcards and live band performances, limited-edition lighthouse popsicles will also be available for free on a first-come, first-served basis.
