The Gaomei Wetlands in Taichung boast abundant natural ecological landscapes and an intertidal zone, which have attracted a large number of visitors in recent years. The long-abandoned Gaomei Lighthouse, which is integrated with the wetlands, will be reopened to the public this month on the afternoon of the 27th after being renovated by the Maritime and Port Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications to promote tourism. It will become the 10th lighthouse in Taiwan open to visitors.

The Gaomei Lighthouse stands 34.4 meters tall and features a unique design — it is the only lighthouse in Taiwan with a red-and-white parallel striped exterior. However, it was decommissioned in 1982. The surrounding area of the lighthouse offers diverse and rich scenery, allowing visitors to overlook the Gaomei Wetlands and the white wind turbines of the Taichung Harbor, as well as take in distant views of scenic spots like the Huoyan Mountain and Tiejian Mountain.

The Maritime and Port Bureau stated that a lighthouse reopening event will be held at 3:30 p.m. on the 27th. Chunghwa Post will also set up a temporary post office at the event site, selling the 103rd edition of lighthouse stamps and giving away free lighthouse postcards. The bureau will also display photos of the lighthouse in one corner of the venue, introducing its origins, history, and images of lighthouses across Taiwan.
