Hekanxi Scenic Area

Hekanxi is located at the junction of two provinces in the southern part of Lingyuan, covering eight administrative regions, 77 villager groups, and a population of 15,000, with a total area of 137 square kilometers. The Qinglong River runs through the entire region, making it a purely stony mountainous area characterized by mountains, water, and a small portion of arable land.

The pristine natural landscapes here are extraordinary, and the tourism resources have vast development potential. There is a 42-meter-tall king oak, breaking the provincial record in the book *Dendrology*, which previously stated that oaks only grow up to 25 meters tall. The globally endangered black stork breeds and frolics here, and it has been hailed by ornithologists as the only black stork breeding ground in Liaoning. Leopards are spotted here, and herds of roe deer roam. The limestone dragon is vividly lifelike, and the small-leaved hackberry "mountain stone bonsai" is called the finest in western Liaoning. Over 30 scenic spots including “Nüwa Mends the Sky,” “Little Guilin of Western Liaoning,” “Panda Rock,” “Lotus Rock,” and “Crescent Moon Cave” are found here. The anti-Japanese army hiding cave and the earthenware pot used by farmer Gao Zhen to deliver meals to wounded soldier Ge Zhenshan during the war are now preserved in the Provincial September 18th History Museum.

The area is rich in plant resources: medicinal plants include wild ginseng, camellia, and goji berries. Ornamental plants include oriental arborvitae, red and white azaleas, and spirea. Wild dried fruits, such as walnuts, hazelnuts, and mountain grapes, are also abundant.

Hekanxi has long been known as the “Jiangnan of Lingyuan”: with its green mountains, clear waters, blue skies, outstanding people, and spiritual land. It nurtures the hopes of green development.

Introduction to Little Huangshan

It is located to the south of the Hekanxi Township government. The mountain is covered with lush vegetation and upright trees, while the Qinglong River flows at its base. Especially on rainy days, when shrouded in mist like a thin veil, it looks remarkably like Huangshan Mountain from afar.

The Hekanxi Scenic Tourist Area features gentle mountains and beautiful waters, with picturesque scenery. The mountains are known as “Little Huangshan,” and the waters are praised as the “Yangshuo of the North.” The scenic area is divided into three parts: Hekanxi, Suzhangzi, and Nianzigou, featuring dozens of attractions such as “Nüwa Mends the Sky,” “Dragon Spring Flying Jade,” “Ancient Cave Coiling Dragon,” “Ancient Temple Lilac,” and “Two Dragons Playing with a Pearl.” With its green mountains, beautiful waters, birdsong, and croaking frogs, it has long attracted poets and scholars. A poem describes it: “Beneath Horsehead Mountain lie many treasures, beneath Pine Cliff rests a reclining rhino; two stones lie facing south, monkey head sprouts lingzhi in heaven; chicken crest hangs the moon three thousand zhang high, in caves coils a dragon over a pool of pure water; Bodhidharma’s ancient cave hides fairies, the scenery by Qinglong River is most wondrous.” The poetic imagery spreads far and wide. The primeval forest of Hekanxi and the beautiful views of Da’nanshan will further transport you into dreams of Jiangnan’s scenery. Nowadays, local residents are not only developing natural landscapes but also incorporating local customs into agritourism.
