The Site of Heishantou City

The Site of Heishantou City is located 5 kilometers directly north of Heishantou Town, Erguna City, Hulunbuir League, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It is a historical site from the Jin and Yuan dynasties, dating back more than 700 years.

The ancient city was one of the main residential fortresses of Genghis Khan’s eldest brother, Zuchi Hasar, and his family. It is composed of an inner city and an outer city, with earthen walls. The outer city is square-shaped, covering an area of 346,290 square meters. There is a moat outside the city walls, and all four sides have city gates, each with a barbican. The inner city is situated in the middle-west and slightly northern part of the outer city, rectangular in shape, covering an area of 18,871 square meters. It has two small gates on the east and west sides, and also features a moat outside. The overall layout resembles the Chinese character “干” (gan), and the site contains many remnants such as colored glazed tiles, blue bricks, dragon-patterned roof tiles, and green-glazed basin fragments.

This heritage site holds significant academic value for the study of the origin and development of the Mongolian people, as well as the politics, economy, history, and culture during the period of the Mongol Empire and early Yuan Dynasty.
