Visit France’s oldest church atop volcanic rock — but first, conquer 270 steps!

What’s your impression of churches? Exquisite architecture, solemn atmosphere?The Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe chapel in Le Puy, central France,will even challenge your “leg power.” To reach this chapel, you’ll have to tackle around 270 steps because it sits atop a 24-story-high volcanic rock!

The Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe chapel was built in 962 AD, making it the oldest church in the Le Puy region with a history of over 1,000 years. Originally, its interior structure was very simple, but after its expansion in the 12th century, two side chapels, a bell tower, small shrines, carved doors, and more were added. The original style is further enhanced by 10th-century frescoes painted on the walls, and observing the cave-like interior is a truly magical experience.

The architecture itself reflects influences from Spain and the Great Mosque of Córdoba. Standing in the chapel, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Le Puy region in France. It is currently a popular tourist route in the area.
