A Must-Ride on the Takachiho Sky Railroad in Miyazaki – A Romantic Mini-Trip to a Hidden Wonderland
Takachiho is a popular destination in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. The Takachiho Gorge is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty, known for its hidden natural wonders. This area is also the setting of the Japanese myth “The Descent of the Heavenly Grandson,” and features numerous myth-related sites such as Kushifuru Peak, Takachiho Shrine, and Amanoiwato Shrine. In addition to these natural attractions and myths, the Takachiho Sky Railroad is also famous. Though the short 30-minute ride only covers a small part of the region, it offers breathtaking views of Takachiho’s beauty.
The Takachiho Railway has been in operation for over half a century. In 2005, due to a typhoon, a section of the tracks was destroyed and could not be repaired or reused. The local tourism board came up with a creative solution: they turned the Takachiho Station area into a memorial park and preserved a well-maintained 2.2-kilometer stretch of track to create a sightseeing railway. They also introduced an adorable mini train. Now, hundreds of visitors come here every day to ride the train and enjoy the scenic views.
The train has just 12 seats, with a driver at both the front and the back.
Aside from riding inside the train, the platform itself is also photogenic. Be sure to take photos at your departure station and capture the charming moments with the train.
For the best photos, try to get a window seat, as the train runs alongside the river for most of the journey. This preparation will help you get even more beautiful shots.
When taking photos, don’t forget the bubbles – no, they’re not pollution. In fact, they’re blown by the friendly driver, making your photos even prettier. The driver is over 70 years old and used to be an electric train operator. After retiring, due to his love for driving, he came to this area to continue working and serving passengers.
The entire ride takes about 30 minutes, with around 15 minutes for each one-way trip, offering a full view of the Takachiho area.
