Origin of Mongolia • Menggu Shiwu Cultural Tourism Scenic Area is one of the ten key public welfare projects of the Hulunbuir Municipal Government in 2010. The planned area covers a total of 398 square kilometers, with the main scenic area spanning 198 square kilometers. Its landscape integrates multiple terrains including mountains, hills, forests, grasslands, wetlands, and riverbanks, featuring a rare and unique ecological environment.

The scenic area focuses on showcasing the historical and cultural features of Ergune Kun, the birthplace of the Mongolian people. Based on both ancient and modern historical documents from China and abroad, and grounded in the area’s beautiful ecological environment and natural scenery, it authentically presents the historical, cultural development, and production and living customs of the Mongolian people through various periods of their evolution from a hunting culture to a nomadic civilization. Through the reconstruction of sacred sites such as Ded Ovoo, Rosin Ovoo, and Qiyanchi Kuren, the portrayal of historical events like the Square of Bodonchar (the ancestor of the Mongols), the Square of Yesugei Baghatur, and the Square of the Broken Arrow Lesson, as well as the development of projects such as the Golden Pasture, Nomadic Tribes, and the East-West Dediyn Valley Gateway Service Area, the scenic area recreates the extraordinary growth history of Genghis Khan’s ancestors from the Borjigin clan along the Erguna River. It has been developed into a large-scale cultural tourism destination that combines cultural tourism, folk experience, mountain exploration, border sightseeing, leisure vacation, and Mongolian pilgrimage.

The construction of the Origin of Mongolia • Menggu Shiwu Cultural Tourism Scenic Area has received high attention from the Hulunbuir Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government. As a key tourism project of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in 2015, it was included in the 2015 National Preferred Tourism Projects List, selected as a key cultural industry project of the autonomous region, and is also one of the ten major public welfare projects of the Hulunbuir Municipal Government. The completion of the cultural tourism scenic area has greatly promoted the dissemination of Mongol-Yuan culture and enhanced global understanding of the history of the Mongolian people’s origins. Many constructions within the scenic area are supported by historical records and archaeological evidence. Visitors can gaze upon today’s landscapes while recalling the events of the past, making history feel remarkably close.

The scenic area is located in Menggu Shiwu Sumu, Erguna City, 280 kilometers from Hailar, 150 kilometers from Labudalin (the seat of the Erguna Municipal Government), 160 kilometers from the 4A-rated Wetland Scenic Area of Erguna, and 80 kilometers from the Moridaga National Forest Park. The nearest airport is Hailar Dongshan Airport, which handled over 1.4 million passengers in 2014, located 293 kilometers from the scenic area. The closest passenger transport station is in downtown Erguna City.

The city supporting the scenic area — Erguna City — is a key tourism destination in Inner Mongolia. Leveraging its advantages of pristine ecology, diverse ethnic cultures, and international appeal, the city has made tourism a central focus of economic restructuring and is striving to develop it into a strategic pillar industry. In 2014, Erguna City received 4.023 million tourists, generating 4 billion yuan in tourism revenue. Several renowned tourism brands have been established around Erguna, including the “No.1 Wetland in Asia,” the “Top Ten Charming Towns in China” — Shiwu Sumu, the “Birthplace of the Mongolian People” — Origin of Mongolia • Menggu Shiwu Cultural Tourism Scenic Area, Birch Forest, Enhe Town, and Qiqian Town. Currently, the city has seven A-level or higher scenic spots, with Moridaga National Forest Park ranked on the “2014 Most Beautiful China List,” and Qiqian honored as an “Autonomous Region-Level Characteristic Landscape Tourism Village.” Family-run guesthouses and homestays cover nearly every township in the city, making them the top choice for visitors seeking authentic local culture. Our Origin of Mongolia Scenic Area is expected to be successfully rated as a 4A-level attraction in 2016. According to statistics, Menggu Shiwu Sumu hosted approximately 400,000–500,000 visitors in 2014. Our scenic area anticipates receiving 300,000–500,000 visitors in 2016, with daily accommodation capacity exceeding 2,000 guests.

The main northern tourism route goes from Hailar to Erguna, and visitors to Erguna will surely travel to Shiwu Sumu. Thus, the Origin of Mongolia • Menggu Shiwu Cultural Tourism Scenic Area will be a must-visit destination for travelers.

In 2016, the scenic area will undergo detailed improvements. Government-invested projects under construction, such as the Inner Mongolia Museum of Mongolian Origins, Menggu Shiwu Hotel, and Menggu Shiwu Museum, are expected to be completed. Additionally, in terms of operational offerings, the scenic area will place greater emphasis on adding projects with ethnic characteristics, participatory elements, and entertainment value. In particular, themed projects such as backpacker-specific tours, auto campsites, outdoor campsites, and specialized group campsites will be among the key development focuses for 2016. The Origin of Mongolia • Menggu Shiwu Cultural Tourism Scenic Area will enrich the tourism content of the Hulunbuir Municipal Government in 2016 and help guide the tourism market toward greater stability.
