Beigong National Forest Park

Beigong National Forest Park is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction and a national forest park.

Located in the mountainous northwest of Fengtai District, Beijing, about 20 kilometers from the city center, Beijing’s Beigong National Forest Park is a hilly nature reserve. Named after its past as a resting place for emperors, the park was established in October 2002 and officially designated as a national forest park by the State Forestry Administration in December 2005. The park covers a total area of 9.145 square kilometers, consisting of three main scenic areas — eastern, western, and central — along with two groups of support facilities, Beigong Mountain Villa and Mingsheng Building, totaling nearly 10,000 square meters. The park features 12 cultural attractions including pavilions, corridors, towers, and pavilions, as well as 15 scenic spots such as Fangze Stream, Little Jiangnan, Maple Leaf Road, and Birch Valley. With 3,000 acres of landscaped greenery, 21 species of high-quality trees totaling 36,000 plants, over 30 types of wildflowers covering more than 50,000 square meters, and a total of 253 plant species, the park stands out as a highlight of ecological development in western Beijing.

The park is situated in the western suburbs of Beijing, within the shallow mountainous area of northwestern Fengtai District, spanning 914.5 hectares. It is the largest and closest national forest park to the city center.

The park features undulating terrain, staggered peaks, deep valleys, lush forests, harmonious integration of mountains and water, and vibrant bird and floral life. Its main peak, Langpo Summit, stands majestically at an elevation of 349.8 meters. To the east lies Lugou Bridge, to the west connects Qianling Mountain, to the south borders the Aerospace City, and to the north neighbors Jietai Temple. It is a renowned destination where “one gazes at the Big Dipper in the sky and enjoys Beigong on the ground.” Covering a total area of 9.145 square kilometers, the park includes three main scenic areas — eastern, western, and central — and two groups of support facilities, Beigong Mountain Villa and Mingsheng Building, together nearly 10,000 square meters. There are 12 cultural attractions like pavilions, corridors, towers, and 15 scenic spots including Fangze Stream, Little Jiangnan, Maple Leaf Road, and Birch Valley. The park has 3,000 acres of landscaped greenery, 21 species of high-quality trees numbering 36,000, over 30 types of wildflowers across more than 50,000 square meters, and 253 plant species, making it a standout in the capital's western ecological development.

The park is divided into ten functional zones: sightseeing, hiking and fitness, fruit picking and fishing, wildflower appreciation, viewing rare sights, forest bathing, colorful foliage viewing, leisure and entertainment, conference and dining, and comprehensive services. Highlights include the colorful Maple Leaf Road, vibrant perennial flower garden, famed Jingxi Divine Spring, picturesque Fangze Stream reminiscent of Jiuzhaigou, exquisitely crafted Huizhou-style Mingsheng Building, idyllic Little Jiangnan, sunset-hued Yanxia Ridge, serene Xinglong Valley, refreshing forest baths, ancient stone bridges from the Ming and Qing dynasties, and the grand Beigong Mountain Villa. Other features include the tombs of the Two Princes from the Yongzheng era, the majestic Qinglong Ridge, the vibrant autumn hues of Lanzhui Platform, and the legendary Wolfs Mountain. Not to be missed are the panoramic Langpo Summit, the dramatic earthquake fault zone with cliffs and precipices, the pagoda-like Zijingshan, the playful Pet Playground, the labyrinthine Jinji Valley, and the flowery Xinghua Slope. Additional features include dragon-tail shaped corridors in arc, snake, and fan forms, plus Rainbow Bridge, Lianxin Bridge, Jade Belt Bridge, and Single-Arch Bridge — each offering a unique charm that showcases the beauty of spring flowers, summer shade, autumn fruits, and winter greenery. With its verdant mountains, clear waters, expansive forests, stunning landscapes, serene valleys, and beautiful springs, the park exemplifies harmony between humans and nature.

The central Langpo Summit Scenic Area features eight peaks: Langpo Summit, Wolfs Mountain, Zijin Mountain, Jinchijiao, Xinghua Slope, Yanxia Ridge, Zhenshan Ridge, and Lanzhui Platform, with Langpo Summit being the highest at 348 meters. The area offers awe-inspiring mountain vistas, expansive scenic beauty, inviting springs and lakes, lush green meadows under blue skies, and refreshing natural oxygen. The scenery combines the charm of classical architecture with the vibrancy of modern design. The park is characterized by unique mountains, expansive forests, beautiful waters, and splendid springs. Each pavilion and tower stands distinctively against the skyline, competing in elegance. Garden-style observation decks provide panoramic views of Beijing’s landscapes, rolling hills, village layouts, and mountainous terrains. Langpo Summit, the main peak, is steep and towering, once a site of volcanic activity and tectonic shifts. The park’s “People’s Congress Forest,” “Friendship Forest,” and “China-Korea Friendship Forest” are richly diverse, while its scenic, special-use, and economic forests form rolling green waves. Bird gardens, orchards, and flower gardens burst with songs, colors, and fruits, each with their own charm. Unique bridges like the Jade Bridge, Rainbow Bridge, ancient stone bridge, as well as creatively designed curved roads for vehicles, pedestrians, and hikers, twist through the mountain terrain. Natural spring water, rocky stream water, and clear lake water offer refreshing and crystalline views. Leisure and fruit-picking zones delight visitors, while areas like Little Jiangnan, Lingyun Hall, Lanzhui Platform, Banxiage Pavilion, Caiyun Dian, Yanxia Ridge, Zijingshan, Fangze Stream, Xinghua Village, Xinglong Valley, and Birch Valley offer captivating natural beauty. Classical-style buildings such as Beigong Mountain Villa and Mingsheng Building, nestled among mountains and forests, provide tranquil settings ideal for vacationing, recreation, and tea appreciation. The park integrates ecotourism, fruit-picking, fishing, sightseeing, scientific research, educational fieldwork, and leisure activities, showcasing the beauty of “spring flowers, summer shade, autumn fruits, and winter greenery.” Every autumn, it becomes another major red leaf viewing spot in Beijing, following Fragrant Hills and Badachu.

The eastern Ying Mountain Scenic Area features undulating terrain with plains, valleys, steep slopes, cliffs, and summits interwoven naturally, creating “one cliff, two plains, six peaks, and seven valleys.” It serves as an ideal location for orienteering sports in the capital. The western Jile Peak Scenic Area, revered since the Liao and Jin dynasties as a sacred site for Confucianism and Taoism, offers sweeping views of vast mountain ranges and the horizon, inspiring a transcendent feeling of unity with nature, and holds significant value for both appreciation and research.
