Portrait of Deng Xiaoping

The giant portrait of Deng Xiaoping, standing at the southeast exit of Litchi Park on the north side of Shennan Avenue in Shenzhen, has in recent years become the best place for domestic and international tourists to pay tribute to the chief architect of China’s reform and opening-up. The portrait was erected on June 28, 1992. It stands ten meters high and thirty meters wide, with fresh flowers and green grass always surrounding it. According to statistics, over a million visitors come here each year to “take a commemorative photo” with this great figure of the century.

Since its completion, the Portrait of Deng Xiaoping has continuously attracted visitors from around the world. After the passing of Comrade Deng, the number of visitors has risen year by year, and major travel agencies in Shenzhen have long listed the portrait as an essential stop on any Shenzhen tour.

Deng Xiaoping (1904–1997) was a great Marxist, proletarian revolutionary, statesman, military strategist, and diplomat. He was one of the principal leaders of the Communist Party of China, the Chinese People's Liberation Army, and the People's Republic of China. He was the chief architect of China’s socialist reform, opening-up, and modernization, and the founder of Deng Xiaoping Theory.

His ancestral home was in Luling County, Ji’an Prefecture, Jiangxi Province (now Ji’an County, Ji’an City, Jiangxi Province).
