The Guan Shanyue Art Museum is a fully government-funded national public cultural institution named after the renowned Chinese painter, educator, and master of the Lingnan School of Painting, Mr. Guan Shanyue. It specializes in the collection and research of artworks by Guan Shanyue and those from 20th-century China, and possesses all the functions of a national art museum. The foundation stone was laid in January 1995, and the museum was completed and opened to the public on June 25, 1997, just before Hong Kong’s handover. Located in the central Futian District of Shenzhen, it sits north of the scenic Lotus Hill and faces the Civic Square to the south. With its beautiful surroundings and convenient transportation, the museum features a uniquely shaped building with classic, elegant colors. Together with major cultural facilities such as the Shenzhen Concert Hall, the Central Library, the Children’s Palace, and the Shenzhen Radio & Television Center, it forms a striking part of Shenzhen’s cultural landscape.

During his lifetime, Mr. Guan Shanyue took great interest in the development of fine arts in Shenzhen. He donated a total of 813 representative works from various periods of his career, along with systematic materials covering his life, artistic practice, and educational endeavors, to the people of Shenzhen. The Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government highly commended Mr. Guan’s spirit of selfless dedication and invested 67 million yuan to build the Guan Shanyue Art Museum, ensuring the permanent preservation of his works for research and appreciation by people around the world.

The museum currently houses a collection of over 5,600 pieces. After nearly 20 years of operation, it has become an important platform for international and domestic art exchanges and a key organizer of large-scale national art exhibitions. It has explored a development path for a modern art museum that is grounded in its collections and aligned with the cultural development of Shenzhen. In 2011, it was designated by the Ministry of Culture as one of the first nine national key art museums in China.

The museum’s mission is to establish an academic focus, build an exhibition brand, and provide visitor-centered services to create a comprehensive and efficient public cultural service system. This allows citizens to enjoy their cultural and artistic rights within a refined and humanistic leisure environment.

The museum’s guiding principle is to develop a modern art museum that combines the functions of a national art gallery with those of a memorial museum for master artists, rooted in its collections and aligned with the cultural development of Shenzhen.

Academic Focus: The Guan Shanyue Art Museum in Shenzhen focuses on the academic study and exhibition of “Guan Shanyue and 20th-century Chinese art and contemporary design.”

Collection System: As of December 2014, the museum houses a collection of over 5,700 pieces. It has initially formed a collection system characterized by outstanding works by Guan Shanyue and other artists from mid-to-late 20th-century China, excellent examples of contemporary design art, as well as notable works from both domestic and international artists.

Born in 1912 and passed away in July 2000, Guan Shanyue was from Yangjiang, Guangdong. His original name was Guan Zehui. In his early years, he studied at the undergraduate level of the Guangzhou Municipal Normal School and taught himself painting diligently. Later, he gained the recognition of Gao Jianfu, a founding figure of the Lingnan School of Painting, who admitted him tuition-free to the Chunshui Painting Academy. Gao became his mentor and gave him the new name Guan Shanyue.
