Shenzhen Lotus Hill Park

Lotus Hill Park was planned in October 10, 1992, and partially opened to the public on June 23, 1997. It is directly under the administration of the Urban Management Office of the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government. The park has currently developed and opened an area of 60 hectares to visitors. Greenery, environmental protection, nature, and harmony are the defining themes of the entire park. Located at the summit of the park’s main peak, the Summit Square covers an area of 4,000 square meters at an elevation of 106 meters. A bronze statue of Comrade Deng Xiaoping stands in the center of the square, offering a panoramic view of the central area. Summit Square has become a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike to pay tribute to the legacy of the great leader and enjoy the scenic views of the city center.

The main gate of Lotus Hill Park features a frame-like structure, symbolizing that the Special Economic Zone is China’s “window” to reform and opening up, with different sceneries inside and outside the window. Visually, it resembles a camera frame. Looking from the outside in, one sees lush greenery; looking from the inside out, a vibrant sea of flowers greets the eye, signifying the development of the SEZ as a vivid microcosm of China’s reform and opening-up. The gate’s dominant color, China Red, signifies the vibrancy and enthusiasm of the SEZ.

The southern part of the park features an 80,000-square-meter coconut grove grassland dominated by palm plants, creating a tropical and subtropical landscape that offers visitors a beautiful environment for activities. There is also a 30,000-square-meter artificial lake with clear water and pleasant scenery, adding charm to the park and providing opportunities for boating and fishing. In the southeast, a 160,000-square-meter kite square mainly consists of open lawns and subtle terrain; flying kites here has become a notable cultural scene in Shenzhen. The southeastern slopes are planted with tens of thousands of flame trees, which burst into brilliant red blooms every summer, creating a spectacular natural sight. The northeast section is a nearly 150,000-square-meter sparse woodland lawn with undulating natural turf and a rich variety of trees and shrubs, providing a lovely leisure space for nearby residents. Adjacent to Lianhua North Village in the northwest, a nearly 70,000-square-meter lawn is planted with rare tree species such as breadfruit trees, flame trees, Alpinia hainanensis, tabebuia trees, and Indonesian chicken-blood trees, along with large peach blossom plantings. The park also includes a flower center, offering flower enthusiasts a great place to purchase blooms.

Since its completion in 1997, Lotus Lake has consistently provided visitors with a high-quality leisure environment and remains a key component of the Lotus Hill Park landscape.

Hu Jintao’s Tree Planting Site. This is where Comrade Hu Jintao planted a tree on September 6, 2010, located at the entrance of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone 30th Anniversary Memorial Garden. The osmanthus tree is an evergreen shrub or small tree of the Oleaceae family, known for its year-round lush foliage, golden flowers, elegant yet not delicate appearance, and richly fragrant blossoms that are subtly intoxicating. Among all osmanthus varieties, it holds the highest ornamental value. Osmanthus is one of China’s ten traditional precious flowering plants, with over 2,500 years of cultivation history, and is commonly found in the Pearl River Delta region, especially as an ornamental plant.

Located at the southeastern corner of Lotus Hill Park, the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone Memorial Garden was constructed using a “garden within a garden” model, becoming a new attraction within Lotus Hill Park. The garden showcases key events in Shenzhen’s reform and opening-up through bronze relief scenes embedded in three surrounding stone walls. Encircling the three walls are 30 small-leaved banyan trees, symbolizing the 30 years of reform and opening-up.

Deng Xiaoping Statue is located at Summit Square in Lotus Hill Park, Futian District, Shenzhen. The statue was unveiled in November 2000 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, with Comrade Jiang Zemin presiding over the unveiling ceremony. The 6-meter-tall, 6-ton statue consists of the main figure and a base. The main figure depicts Deng Xiaoping wearing a trench coat, walking forward with confidence and steady strides, cast in silicon bronze. The reinforced concrete base is clad in granite.

Deng Xiaoping Statue. This is the first statue of Deng Xiaoping approved by the central government and erected as a city sculpture, bearing witness to the great history of reform and opening-up in the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. It embodies the pioneering and innovative spirit of the SEZ moving forward boldly, as well as the admiration and remembrance of Deng Xiaoping, the chief architect of China’s reform and opening-up, by the people of Shenzhen. The statue holds significant value and meaning for the research and preservation of the history of reform and opening-up. In 2005, it was selected as one of the “Top Ten Historic Architectural Landmarks of Shenzhen’s Reform and Opening-Up” by the selection committee and expert panel of the “Shenzhen Reform and Opening-Up Top Ten Historic Buildings.”
