Shenzhen Civic Square

Shenzhen Civic Square is located between the Civic Center and Shennan Road. As the city’s most important urban square, it officially opened to the public on October 1, 2006. To make efficient use of energy, the entire square’s lighting system employs energy-saving and environmentally friendly equipment.

The Civic Square is an important part of the central square and the south-central axis landscape environment project in Shenzhen’s central area. This project officially commenced in April 2005. With the theme of “a new integration of city and nature,” the square not only provides spaces for recreation, leisure, and entertainment but also uses extensive greenery to beautify the environment, playing a significant role in alleviating the urban heat island effect.

On the east and west sides of the Civic Square, there are large areas of green space. Tall trees are arranged in the form of a “green cloud,” creating a sloping tree-sea landscape. Liu Jie, a senior engineer from the Municipal Construction Works Bureau, told reporters that over 300 species of greening trees were selected for the Civic Square, with approximately 100,000 square meters of turf planted. Since the trees were transplanted, their canopies were pruned and do not appear very tall. In three to five years, once the canopies have fully spread out, they will create a more comfortable “urban living room” for residents.

Walking on the Civic Square, the scenery constantly changes. Between the green space and the central axis of the square, there are two large ecological water collection depressions where plants such as lotus flowers grow. According to reports, these water collection areas can not only gather rainwater from the square and green spaces but also host various aquatic plants for public enjoyment. Directly opposite the central axis of the Civic Center lies the central plaza of the Civic Square. On the east and west sides of the square stand three crystal-clear light towers, each 25 meters high, which provide illumination at night. On the central axis pavement and steps of the square, solar display lights and solar star lights are installed. These devices absorb solar energy during the day and emit light naturally at night without requiring electricity. The overall lighting brightness of the square is controlled under three modes: normal days, holidays, and major festive events. Regular lighting is further divided into full-night and midnight periods. To use energy more efficiently, the square employs high-efficiency lighting sources and energy-saving lamps. Additionally, for public convenience, the square features four viewing platforms and four restrooms.

On the south side of the Civic Square, two underground passages crossing Shennan Road have entered the renovation stage and are expected to be completed by the end of October. Once finished, the public will be able to access the southern part of the Civic Square through these two underground passages.
