Statue of Deng Xiaoping

The Statue of Deng Xiaoping serves as a patriotic education site.

The Statue of Deng Xiaoping is located at the top square of Lianhuashan Park in Futian District, Shenzhen. In November 2000, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, the statue was unveiled by Comrade Jiang Zemin. The statue stands 6 meters tall and weighs 6 tons, consisting of the main figure and a base. The main figure shows Comrade Deng Xiaoping wearing a trench coat, standing tall and proud, striding forward with firm steps. It is made of silicon bronze. The reinforced concrete base is clad in granite. On the back, a marble plaque is inscribed with: “The development and experience of Shenzhen have proved that our policy in establishing special economic zones is correct. Deng Xiaoping, January 26, 1984.” The southern side of the base is engraved with running script in traditional Chinese characters: “Comrade Deng Xiaoping. Jiang Zemin, October 1, 2000.”

This is the first statue of Comrade Deng Xiaoping erected in the form of urban sculpture to be officially approved by the central government. It bears witness to the great historical process of reform and opening-up in the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, embodies the spirit of bold advancement and practical innovation of the SEZ, and reflects the admiration and remembrance of the people of Shenzhen for Deng Xiaoping, the chief architect of China’s reform and opening-up. It holds significant value and meaning for the research and preservation of the history of reform and opening-up. In 2005, after evaluation and selection by the “Shenzhen Top Ten Historic Buildings of Reform and Opening-Up” committee and expert panel, this statue was included in the “Shenzhen Top Ten Historic Buildings of Reform and Opening-Up.”
