Nanling Village
Nanling Village serves as a patriotic education base.
Located in Nanling Village Community, Nanwan Subdistrict, Longgang District, Nanling Village covers an area of 4 square kilometers, with 800 villagers and a total population of 60,000 within its jurisdiction. In 2011, the community’s collective economy generated a total income of 270 million yuan, with collective fixed assets valued at 2 billion yuan, contributing 180 million yuan in taxes to the state. Since the reform and opening up, Nanling Village has achieved rapid development in economic and social construction, attaining remarkable accomplishments. It has been awarded 28 national-level honors, including “National Advanced Unit in Spiritual Civilization Construction,” “National Civilized Community,” “National Civilized Unit,” “National Model Community for Harmonious Community Development,” “National Advanced Grassroots Party Organization,” and “National May 1 Labor Certificate.” It has also been recognized twelve times in a row as a “Civilized Unit,” “Civilized Model Village,” and “Civilized Community” in Guangdong Province. On February 22, 2000, Comrade Jiang Zemin visited Nanling Village and made the important directive to “remember the source of wealth and strive for further progress.” On April 12, 2003, General Secretary Hu Jintao, during his inspection of Nanling, encouraged the villagers to “remain modest, never slacken, and keep moving forward, carrying on our fine traditions and adding glory to the banner of Nanling.” In May 2000, Nanling Village was designated as a “Guangdong Provincial Patriotic Education Base.”
Nanling Village has always placed great emphasis on and strengthened patriotic education by establishing a series of educational bases themed around “Remembering the Source of Wealth and Striving for Further Progress.” First, it built the “Exhibition Hall of Remembering the Source of Wealth.” During the renovation of the old village, discarded items such as old furniture and farming tools, which villagers no longer needed after moving into new homes, were collected and displayed here. The hall also exhibits photos showcasing the new look of the village and its development history, reminding young people not to forget the hardships of the past and the challenges faced by their predecessors in building the village, while guiding them to uphold and carry forward the tradition of hard work. Second, it constructed the “Chinese History Corridor” and the “Hiking Great Wall.” Within QiuShuiShan Park, a 60-meter-long “Chinese History Corridor” was built, using murals to depict 5,000 years of Chinese civilization. Additionally, a 400-meter-long hiking Great Wall, modeled after Beijing’s Badaling Great Wall, was constructed to showcase the glorious achievements of the Chinese nation. Third, a 5,000-square-meter “Hakka Folk Culture Garden” was established. Completed in early 2001, it vividly presents the folk customs of the Hakka people and an overview of Nanling Village’s development through wax figures, real objects, photos, and text. Fourth, historical relics such as wartime tunnels were restored. In the early years of liberation, the People’s Liberation Army stationed in Nanling Village to defend the national frontier outpost and built a roughly 200-meter-long wartime tunnel on QiuShuiShan, which had been abandoned for many years. In 2001, Nanling Village restored the tunnel and opened it to the public to provide revolutionary history education for young people. Fifth, a Mao Zedong Badge Exhibition Hall was built. In 2002, after extensive fundraising, Nanling Village collected nearly 20,000 Mao Zedong badges and specially constructed an exhibition hall. Sixth, a 10,000-square-meter “Long March Sculpture Park” was created. Opened in May 2003, the park features group sculptures depicting the spectacular scenes of the Red Army’s 25,000-li Long March. Seventh, 20 acres of rice paddies have been preserved as a labor education base for young people, where they are often organized for labor education activities. Eighth, a Socialist Concept of Honor and Disgrace Education Hall was established. In 2006, centered around the “Socialist Concept of Honor and Disgrace” proposed by General Secretary Hu Jintao, Nanling Village built this education hall, using exemplary stories of advanced individuals such as Qian Xuesen and Lei Feng to promote education on the concept. Ninth, a community-level youth education and training base was developed. In 2009, to further enhance ideological and moral education for young people and improve their overall quality, Nanling Village Community constructed a Youth Education and Training Activity Center. Covering an area of 30,000 square meters, the center includes dormitories, a cafeteria, a medical care room, a learning reflection room for 200 trainees and instructors, as well as outdoor sports facilities. It offers educational programs for local and surrounding youth in areas such as national defense education, physical training, and skill development. Tenth, a “People’s Heroes Wall” was established. The Nanling Village Community compiled photos and stories of dozens of exemplary figures such as Liu Hulan, Lei Feng, and Qian Xuesen, and set up a large-scale thematic propaganda mural titled “People’s Heroes,” spanning tens of meters, in key public spaces such as the youth education base, community cultural and sports plaza, and commercial plaza, aiming to strengthen “red education” among young people while studying revolutionary history.
After years of development, Nanling Village has established a relatively comprehensive patriotic education base characterized by the theme of “Remembering the Source of Wealth and Striving for Further Progress.”
