Tomb of Lady Liu, Mother of Lai

The Tomb of Lady Liu, Mother of Lai, is a cultural relic protection unit of Shenzhen.

The Tomb of Lady Liu, Mother of Lai, is located at Shijingkeng Shidi in Pengcheng, Dapeng Town, Longgang District, Shenzhen. It was built in the 19th year of the Daoguang reign during the Qing Dynasty (1839). Lady Liu was the grandmother of Lai Enjue, Viceroy of the Guangdong Navy, and the mother of Lai Yuntai, Commander of Dinghai Garrison in Zhejiang, and Lai Xinyang, Viceroy of the Fujian Navy.

The entire tomb is built from finely crafted granite stones and has a convex-shaped layout. The surface structures of the tomb remain well-preserved. It is divided into four parts: the approach path, the tomb hall, the offering hall, and the burial mound. The tomb is 9 meters long in total, with the gravestone standing 1.52 meters high, 0.9 meters wide, and 0.4 meters thick. The inscription on the gravestone, carved in relief using regular script, reads: “Tomb of Lady Liu, Mother of Lai, Honored with the Title of Second-Rank Noblewoman by the Imperial Court of Qing, Tomb Pathway, Buried on the Jiahei Month of the 19th Year of Daoguang (1839), an Auspicious Day.” It also lists the names of descendants who erected the stone, including her son, Yingyang, Commander of Dinghai Garrison in Zhejiang. The tomb hall features a pair of stone drums and a pair of stone lions; the tomb path has a pair of stone lions and a pair of stone ornamental columns. The columns are inscribed with a couplet: “Returning to paradise through the celestial garden, the dragon coils for a thousand years bestowing blessings; the majestic Phoenix Hill nurtures beauty, successive phoenix decrees and phoenix honors multiply glorious titles.”

In 1984, the People’s Government of Shenzhen Municipality designated it as a cultural relic protection unit.
