General Liu Qilong’s Former Residence

General Liu Qilong’s Former Residence is a cultural relic protection unit of Shenzhen.

General Liu Qilong’s Former Residence is located in the middle section of Nanmen Street, Dapeng Ancient Town, Dapeng Subdistrict, Longgang District, Shenzhen. Built during the Jiaqing and Daoguang reigns of the Qing Dynasty, the entire structure faces south and is a courtyard-style complex made of brick and wood, covering a construction area of approximately 660 square meters. It is a mid-Qing Dynasty official residence-style building. The floor plan is an irregular trapezoid. Entering from the side gate, the center features the main hall, which has three bays and three sections, two reception halls, one courtyard, and six wing rooms. To the left is the rear courtyard, which includes four wing rooms and one courtyard. The structure has brick walls and wooden beams, stone column bases, a flush gable roof, plaster carvings on the ridges, and square bricks on the interior floors. The eaves are carved with designs of flowers, birds, plants, and human figures. The architectural details are exquisitely decorated, characterized by bluestone wall bases, blue brick walls, floor tiles, stone column bases, and wooden beams. A pair of drum-shaped stone ornaments is preserved at the entrance. The horizontal stone plaque above the door reads “General’s Residence.” The roof tiles, plaster decorations, and other elements are largely original late Qing Dynasty features.

In 1984, the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government designated it as a cultural relic protection unit.

Liu Qilong (1772–1830), courtesy name Zhenxing, nickname Ashi, was a native of Dapeng City, Xin’an County (now Dapeng Subdistrict, Longgang District). Coming from a poor family and of military background, he was sturdy and burly. He had an excellent command of water skills, excelling in boating, rowing, and steering, navigating the seas as if on flat land. He knew the sea routes, wind directions, reefs, and shoals like the back of his hand. In his early years, he served in the Dapeng Battalion. In the eighth year of the Jiaqing reign (1803), he was appointed as the right squad leader of the Pinghai Battalion, later becoming a captain of the Xiangshan Regiment.
