The ruins of the Dapeng Subprefect’s Office, also known as the ruins of the Dapeng Subprefect’s “Xietai Yamen,” are located within the Dapeng Fortress in Longgang District. The Dapeng Subprefect, also called the Dapeng Xietai, was a Qing military official of the second rank, ranking just below the provincial level. As the highest military commander of Dapeng Fortress, he was responsible for coastal defense along a 400-li stretch from the waters off Dapeng Fortress to the Pearl River Estuary at Laowanshan, including Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and Lantau Island, and guarded the left sea route of the Pearl River Estuary, serving as the “gateway to the provincial capital.”
