The Residence of Zheng the Sima

The Residence of Zheng the Sima is located on the main street west of Dapeng Fortress. Built in the late Qing Dynasty, it consists of two sections spanning three courtyards, with a width of 7.1 meters and a depth of 9.3 meters. It features exquisitely crafted and sturdy wooden eaves carvings, and the rear hall houses spirit plaques. The small courtyard is well-preserved. A wooden plaque inscribed with “Sima Residence” hangs above the main gate.

The owner, Zheng Caili, served at the Tongzhi Office and held the official rank of Tongzhi, respectfully referred to as “Sima.” The residence of a Tongzhi official was also called a “Sima Residence.” The entire building faces south and covers an area of 140 square meters. It is divided into left and right sections: the left side has three bays, two courtyards, and one central patio, while the right side has one bay, two courtyards, and one central patio. Architectural features include stone slab foundations, grey brick walls, and tiled roofs.

Zheng Caili’s ancestor, Zheng Shengfa, once served as a military officer in the Left Camp of Nan’ao and was later summoned to the capital to serve as an imperial guard and commander—making him quite the military figure. The Zheng family held considerable influence in Dapeng. Zheng Caili rose to the rank of Tongzhi. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, a Tongzhi was a ninth-rank civil official, respectfully called “Sima.” He served at the Tongzhi Office in Dapeng Town and was a notable local official, well-regarded as the leader of the town and villages.
