Ancestral Hall of Cui Qingxian

The Ancestral Hall of Cui Qingxian is a cultural relic protection unit of Fogang County.

The Ancestral Hall of Cui Qingxian is located in Fenglian Village, Shuitou Town, Fogang County. Built during the Ming Dynasty, it was destroyed by fire in the late Qing Dynasty and rebuilt in the sixth year of the Republic of China (1917). The hall faces south and features a flush-gable roof, fire-prevention gables, and green-glazed tile trim. It has a width of three bays and a depth of three bays, with auxiliary halls on both sides separated by Qingyun Lanes. The building covers an area of 427 square meters.

The plaque above the hall’s entrance bears five bold European-style characters reading “Ancestral Hall of Cui Qingxian,” handwritten by the Ming Dynasty scholar Chen Xianzhang (Baisha). Under the second bay’s eaves hangs a plaque inscribed with “Spirit of the Lingnan Region.” This plaque originally hung in the Guangzhou Ancestral Hall of Cui but was relocated north to the Fogang Ancestral Hall after the Guangzhou temple was destroyed. “Spirit of the Lingnan Region” was inscribed by Chen Xingxue, the Governor of Guangdong, and calligraphed by Li Angying, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Personnel.

Cui Qingxian (1157–1239), also known as Yu and styled Jupo, was a native of Cuwu Village, Zhongxin, Zengcheng. He passed the imperial examination in the Jiayin year (1193) of the Shaoxi era during the Southern Song Dynasty, rose to the position of Right Prime Minister, and was posthumously honored as the Duke Who Opened the State of Nanhai, with the posthumous name “Qingxian.”

In 1986, the Fogang County People’s Government designated it as a cultural relic protection unit.

Shuitou Town: A town under the jurisdiction of Fogang County. Established as Shuitou District in 1955, reorganized as a township in 1957, converted into a commune in 1959, reinstated as a district in 1983, and upgraded to a town in 1987.
