Xiajiaolong Site

The Xiajiaolong Site is a cultural heritage protection unit of Wengyuan County.

The Xiajiaolong Site is situated on the western slope of Furonglonggeng Ridge in Bazhai Town, Wengyuan County. It dates from the late Neolithic Age to the Han Dynasty. The site spans about 3,000 square meters. The archaeological team from the Guangdong Provincial Museum excavated 170 square meters between 1985 and 1986. The cultural content can be divided into two phases. The first phase belongs to the Shixia Culture, with unearthed pottery including tray tripods, cauldron tripods, perforated ring-footed plates, cauldrons, and jars, as well as stone tools such as long adzes, trapezoidal adzes, shouldered and segmented adzes. Decorative patterns feature abundant added coil designs. Carbonized rice samples were also discovered. The second phase mainly consists of high-fired clay pottery, predominantly decorated with grid patterns, some with stamped impressions, clearly representing Han Dynasty remains.

In 1985, the People’s Government of Wengyuan County designated it as a cultural heritage protection unit.

Bazhai Town: Located in the northeastern part of Wengyuan County, Bazhai Town covers an area of 384 square kilometers, with over 470,000 mu of forested land and 56,000 mu of arable land. It borders Shixing County, Lianping County of Heyuan City, and Quannan County of Jiangxi Province. The town is 23 kilometers away from the county seat, Longxian. Provincial highways S244 and S245 run through the town. Bazhai Town administers 22 village committees, 2 neighborhood committees, as well as joint forest and pasture farms, with 331 villager groups and a total population of 52,728, including 48,954 agricultural residents. It is an important border town of Wengyuan County.
