Sacred Site Cliff Rock Carvings

The Sacred Site Cliff Rock Carvings are a cultural relic protection unit of Guangdong Province.

The Sacred Site Cliff Rock Carvings are located on the right side of the stone wall inside the mouth of Sacred Site Cliff in Xiaodong Village, Neiguan Town, Lianping County. They document the rock carvings where Han Jing, a native of Shangdang and magistrate of Longchuan County, funded the restoration of Sacred Site Cliff. Carved in the 18th year of the Shaoxing era of the Southern Song Dynasty (1148), the entire text covers an area of 0.8 square meters, with each character spanning 0.08 meters. The inscription, in intaglio regular script, reads: “Han Jing of Shangdang once passed through this place and, struck by its secluded beauty and landscape that rivals even that of Mount Heng and Mount Huo, lamented the devastation wrought by calamity, leaving the temple in ruins—a truly lamentable sight. Now, during my tenure as magistrate of Longchuan for three years, I have used my own funds to restore it, transforming the mountain’s form and the water’s appearance. This cliff carving is made to record the event. On an auspicious day of the Wu Chen year in Shaoxing, 1148.” Sacred Site Cliff is one of the long-standing Eight Scenic Spots of Lianping.

In 1986, the People's Government of Lianping County designated it as a cultural relic protection unit. In 2012, the People's Government of Guangdong Province listed it as part of the seventh batch of Guangdong Provincial Cultural Relic Protection Units.
