Taling Martyrs' Cemetery

Taling Martyrs' Cemetery is a cultural relic protection unit of Heyuan City, a classic red tourism site, and a patriotic education base.

Taling Martyrs' Cemetery is located on Dadi Dun Mountain in Taling Village, Xiuduan Town, Lianping County, approximately 3.5 kilometers from Dahhu Market Town.

Dahhu and Xiuduan were revolutionary base areas during the Anti-Japanese War and the Liberation War in Lianping County. Many revolutionary martyrs emerged during the struggle, all willing to shed blood and sacrifice their lives for the freedom and liberation of the people. Comrade Zeng Kunyan, former captain of the Steel Company of the Guilin Regiment, proposed the establishment of Taling Martyrs' Cemetery to commemorate the martyrs who fell in battles at Taling, Shinao Mountain, and other sites. This proposal aligned with the wishes of the martyrs’ families and the people of the revolutionary base areas and received attention and support from the county Party committee, the county government, as well as leaders of the former Dongjiang Column and Guangdong-Guangxi-Hunan Border Column—especially Zheng Qun, former commander of the Second Eastern Detachment. Zeng Kunyan, Zheng Qun, and other veterans took the lead in making donations, and support poured in from all sectors of society, raising a total of over 460,000 yuan. Construction of Taling Martyrs' Cemetery began in 1993 and was completed in 1999.

Taling Martyrs' Cemetery covers an area of about 5,000 square meters. The cemetery is divided into three sections: the front section features a straight path leading into the cemetery, 73 meters long, with a ceremonial gate inscribed with the four characters “Hún Zhuàng Jiǔ Lián” (Spirits Strengthen the Nine Ridges), and a couplet on both sides reading “Steel Banners Red as the Sun, Loyal Hearts and Blood Write History.” The middle section is a large open plaza with a glazed-tile memorial archway-style gate facing west, inscribed with “Taling Martyrs' Cemetery,” and flanked by a couplet reading “Glorious Deeds Shine as the Sun and Moon, Noble Spirits Uplift Mountains and Rivers.” On both sides of the plaza are stone inscriptions and a map of the Taling Defensive Battle. The rear section is the main burial ground, featuring a square stele and a four-cornered pavilion. The pavilion is inscribed with eight golden regular-script characters reading “Shīzi Nǎo Zhàn Dòu Jì Niàn Tíng” (Memorial Pavilion for the Battle of Lion's Brain). Behind the pavilion is a stone tablet engraved with the names of revolutionary martyrs, and on both sides are inscribed poems and dedications. Further back, the tombstones of fallen soldiers are arranged in neat rows. This martyrs' cemetery holds significant value for the study of local revolutionary history.

In November 2006, it was designated as a Patriotic Education Base by the Heyuan Municipal Committee and Heyuan Municipal Government. In July 2010, it was announced as a Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit by Lianping County Government. Renovations were carried out in the second half of 2010, and in May 2011, it was declared a Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit by Heyuan Municipal Government.
