Monument to Martyr Zhang Hepeng

The Monument to Martyr Zhang Hepeng is a classic site on the red tourism route.

The Monument to Martyr Zhang Hepeng is located on the mountainside of Huangling Mountain, about 100 meters northeast of Zhongxin Town in Lianping County and approximately 200 meters from the Second People's Hospital of the county.

Zhang Hepeng, originally from Songkou in Meixian, Guangdong, was born in Indonesia. He returned to China at the age of 14 to study and later joined the Dongjiang Column. He had served as a teacher at Datian Primary School in Longjie, Houdong Primary School in Dahú, and Zhongxin Town Primary School in Lianping, among other places, using his teaching position as a cover to carry out revolutionary activities. In late November 1945, due to betrayal by a traitor, Zhang Hepeng, Liang Juemin, Liang Weicheng, and Yan Tao were arrested by the Kuomintang. The enemy subjected them to severe torture, but they all remained resolute and did not reveal any secrets of the Party or the army. After Yan Tao was released on bail, Zhang Hepeng, Liang Juemin, and Liang Weicheng continued to endure brutal torture in prison and remained steadfast in their struggle against the enemy. The underground Party made multiple attempts to rescue them, but without success. On January 6, 1946, the three were executed together by the enemy at Xiajie Gate in Zhongxin. Zhang Hepeng was only 24 years old at the time of his death. To commemorate the heroic deeds of Martyr Zhang Hepeng, the Lianping County People’s Government built the Monument to Martyr Zhang Hepeng after the liberation.

The monument faces southeast and is situated northwest. It stands 2.5 meters tall, with a square base measuring 1.2 meters on each side. The surrounding area of the monument features a protective wall that is 4 meters in diameter, 30 centimeters wide, and 50 centimeters high, constructed with fired bricks, stones, and lime. On the front and back of the monument, there are embedded stone slabs inscribed with text in vertical relief. The front slab reads “Erected in 1956, Rebuilt in the Winter of 1982,” with “Monument to Martyr Zhang Hepeng” in the center and “Erected by the People’s Government of Lianping County” at the bottom right. On the upper part of the back slab, the words “Revolutionary Martyr” are painted in red, while the left side also features the words “Immortal Glory” in red. The back of the monument includes an engraved biography detailing his life and deeds.
