Martyrs' Monument to Wu Jianchang

The Martyrs' Monument to Wu Jianchang is a classic site of red tourism.

The Martyrs' Monument to Wu Jianchang is located halfway up Taling Mountain in Zhepi Village, Zhongxin Town, Lianping County.

Wu Jianchang was a native of Zhepi Village, Zhongxin Town, Lianping County. In 1941, while studying at Huana Primary School in Zhepi Village, he actively participated in anti-Japanese salvation propaganda activities organized by underground Communist Party member Zhong Ming, and joined the Chinese Communist Party that winter. In 1944, Wu Jianchang and others organized a group of local youths in Zhepi to launch the progressive publication Spark Newspaper, actively promoting the resistance against Japan. That winter, a student party cell was established in Zhepi, and Wu Jianchang was appointed as its leader. In the autumn of 1945, Wu Jianchang entered Lianping Middle School and served as the leader of the student party cell there. In late November of the same year, underground party member Xiao Degen informed Wu that the enemy was mobilizing troops from four counties to attack Jiulian Mountain and "encircle and suppress" the Third Detachment of the Dongjiang Column. Wu walked over 40 kilometers, passing through five enemy checkpoints, to reach Zhongxin, where he delivered the intelligence to operative You Liang, enabling the guerrilla forces to evade the enemy's "encirclement and suppression" in time.

In the first half of 1947, following instructions from the South China Branch of the Chinese Communist Party, armed struggle resumed in the Jiulian Mountain area. Deng Ji, the leading Party figure in Lianping County, assigned Wu Jianchang to return to Zhongxin to organize a guerrilla unit of over 20 members (initially called the Pursuit Team, later renamed the Hongyan Team) together with Zeng Kunyan, Wu Wenjiong, and Wu Wenhui. Wu Jianchang served as the political instructor, and Zeng Kunyan as the team leader. This unit attacked the Nationalist Party’s Dengta Militia and stormed the Dahuxiang Township Office, achieving victory.

In the spring of 1948, the Hongyan Team was reorganized into the Guilin Team, with Wu Jianchang serving as the political instructor of the First Company. In August, the Guangdong-Gan Border Detachment was established, and the First Company of Guilin was incorporated into its main Third Regiment, with Wu continuing to serve as the political instructor of the First Company. On September 13, part of the Third Regiment was ordered to escort personnel from the border detachment’s headquarters newspaper and radio station in Jiulian. On the morning of the 15th, when the unit turned back toward Qingzhou, it was ambushed by an enemy force that had traveled a long distance. Our forces immediately launched a fierce counterattack. In the afternoon, due to having used more than half their ammunition, they were forced to fight while retreating. Eventually, Wu Jianchang led a squad to stay behind and cover the retreat. He was tragically killed in action during the defensive battle.

To commemorate Martyr Wu Jianchang, in June 1984, the Zhepi Village Committee raised funds to build the Martyrs' Monument to Wu Jianchang.
