Huangmeixie Battle Site

The Huangmeixie Battle Site is a classic red tourism attraction.

The Huangmeixie Battle Site is located in Guanling Village, Potou Town, Lianping County.

On the night of June 20, 1949, just before the liberation of the county seat, Huang Boqiang, the Nationalist county magistrate of Lianping, and Xie Yuechen, commander of the “bandit suppression” brigade, led over 300 troops to flee westward from the county town to Potou. In order to overthrow the Huang Boqiang regime and achieve the full liberation of Lianping, the CCP Jiulian Regional Committee issued instructions to immediately organize forces to pursue the fleeing remnants of Huang Boqiang. In early July, over 200 troops advanced into Potou and were stationed in areas such as Potou Street and Louxia Village below the buildings, monitoring Huang Boqiang’s movements and preparing for the eventual complete defeat of the Lianping forces.

On the evening of September 14, our troops divided into two routes to encircle and attack Huang Boqiang’s forces. In the early hours of September 15, upon hearing news of our attack, Huang Boqiang and Xie Guozhou, the Nationalist district head of Potou, fled in panic (later escaping to Hong Kong). At dawn, our forces spotted over 300 enemy troops fleeing southward through Lidong’ao. Zeng Kunyi and Zeng Zong led two companies (over 100 troops) of the First Battalion of the Fifth Regiment in pursuit. In the morning, Wu Haiteng and Wu Wenhui led a company that searched the area around Huangmeixie in Potou and encountered the enemy, immediately engaging them in battle. Once the battle began, the enemy retreated into the Chen residence and used the high ground to their advantage, unleashing intense firepower to block our offensive. One of our companies had maneuvered behind the enemy but the main force was still behind. Facing the enemy's concentrated fire, our troops had no choice but to fight at close range from the fields below the road, just meters away. The situation was unfavorable for our side, so Company Commander Zeng Kunyi quickly adjusted tactics, ordering the Second Company to retreat while the First Company flanked around to occupy the heights and control the enemy’s dominant position. The fighting continued until dusk, and eventually, under the pressure of our overwhelming forces, the enemy abandoned the building and fled. Our troops stormed the structure and captured one enemy radio set and a batch of military supplies. In this battle, four of our soldiers, including Zeng Niangxian, bravely sacrificed their lives.
